Flawless Diamonds and Clarity

This page summarizes clarity and Flawless grade, which are important when evaluating colorless diamonds.
Based on the GIA Clarity Scale, it outlines the differences from FL to I grades.

What Is a Flawless Diamond?

A flawless diamond is a diamond with no internal inclusions or surface blemishes visible under 10× magnification.

Because diamonds are formed under intense heat and pressure deep within the Earth, many have internal or surface characteristics.
For this reason, diamonds graded as Flawless are extremely rare.

What Is Diamond Clarity?

Clarity refers to the degree to which inclusions inside a diamond and blemishes on its surface are visible.

Diamonds with fewer such characteristics are rarer, and clarity can also affect value.
However, clarity is not simply a matter of whether a diamond has “flaws” or not. It is evaluated based on factors such as the size, location, color, number, and visibility of those characteristics.

GIA Clarity Scale

The GIA Clarity Scale is divided into 11 grades, from FL to I3.

Differences Between FL / IF / VVS / VS / SI / I

FL | Flawless
No inclusions or blemishes are visible under 10× magnification.

IF | Internally Flawless
No inclusions are visible under 10× magnification; only surface characteristics may be visible.

VVS1 / VVS2
Inclusions are very difficult to see under 10× magnification.

VS1 / VS2
Inclusions range from difficult to somewhat easy to see under 10× magnification.

SI1 / SI2
Inclusions are noticeable under 10× magnification.

I1 / I2 / I3
Inclusions are easy to see under 10× magnification and may affect transparency or brilliance.

Why Flawless Diamonds Are Rare

Diamonds are formed in nature, and many have internal or surface characteristics.
Only a limited number show no visible characteristics even under 10× magnification, making Flawless diamonds a highly rare grade.

In clarity grading, not only the presence or absence of characteristics is considered, but also their size, nature, location, color, and quantity.
Even within the same diamond, the overall impression can vary depending on where and what kind of characteristics are present.

Why Clarity Matters in Colorless Diamonds

In colorless diamonds, transparency and the way light returns have a strong impact on the overall impression.
For this reason, clarity is one of the important points to check when evaluating a colorless diamond.

In particular, Flawless is an easy-to-understand standard for those seeking the clear, pure impression of a colorless diamond, as it indicates that no inclusions or surface characteristics are visible.

About GIA

GIA is an institute engaged in gemological research, education, and grading.

It is known for its role in the development of the 4Cs, which describe diamond quality, as well as the international diamond grading system.

GIA reports are used worldwide as reference documents for evaluating diamonds.
