A Remarkable Natural Diamond, and the Ring It Inspired

I first encountered this diamond through a supplier I trust.

“I thought this might be your kind of stone, so I kept it aside for you,” he said as he showed it to me.

I was immediately drawn to it. Still, for a moment, I wondered whether I should choose something more conventional, such as a round-cut diamond.

Hesitation is part of how I buy stones. I take my time, separating the ones I will purchase from those I will leave behind. This diamond remained until the very end.

Eventually, I said, “I’ll take this one.”

The supplier smiled. “I thought you would.”

I brought the diamond back to Hiroshima and displayed it in the shop. Not long afterwards, N visited us for an unrelated matter.

During our conversation, I showed her the stone. She looked at it and said, “That’s an unusual diamond,” then went home without saying much more.

A few days later, she contacted me to ask whether it was still available. I sent her photographs and videos over LINE, and as she spent more time looking at the stone, she decided to purchase it and have it made into a ring.

N usually loves diamonds with plenty of sparkle. This stone is different: rather than producing the fine brilliance of a conventional cut, it catches the light across its surfaces.

When she returned to the shop, we agreed that the finished ring should still have the sparkle she loves. That conversation led to the idea of placing additional diamonds beneath the stone, and the design began to take shape.

N wanted a relatively wide band, with a particular width at the base of the shank. The ring also needed to be practical for everyday wear, so the design was developed around those requirements.

I proposed both platinum and 18K yellow gold. Although the yellow gold version would cost more to produce, N chose it almost immediately.
